That is not a scandal, and it does not mean senior foods are pointless. It means you cannot outsource the decision to the word on the bag. What actually differs between products is calorie density, protein level, joint additives and fibre — and those vary enormously between two foods both called senior.

What senior dogs actually need nutritionally
Fewer calories, the same or more protein, and more omega-3s. That is the honest summary, and the middle part surprises people.
- Protein: do not cut it by default. The old advice to reduce protein in older dogs applied to dogs with diagnosed kidney disease. Healthy senior dogs generally need adequate — often generous — protein to hold on to lean muscle, which they lose naturally with age.
- Calories: usually down. Activity drops before appetite does. This is the main reason middle-aged dogs get heavy, and extra weight makes every joint problem worse.

When is a dog actually senior?
Roughly seven years for a medium-sized dog, but size changes it a lot. Giant breeds like Great Danes and Mastiffs are often considered senior at five or six; small breeds frequently are not until ten or eleven. A more useful trigger than a birthday: switch when you notice the changes. Less enthusiasm on walks, stiffness after lying down, weight creeping on despite the same food, or a duller coat.
How to switch foods without wrecking your dog’s stomach
Transition over seven to ten days, and go slower for older dogs than you would for a young one. Days 1 to 3, a quarter new food. Days 4 to 6, half. Days 7 to 9, three quarters. Day 10, all new. If stools loosen, go back a step and hold there for a few days.
