In short

The best cat DNA test for most people in 2026 is Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats — it screens the widest breed panel, returns results fastest, and usually costs the least of the big three. Basepaws Breed + Health is the pick if you want the dental report and the deepest breed storytelling, and Orivet Health Screen is the cheapest way to get health markers if you do not care about breed at all. If you want raw genomic data, Basepaws Whole Genome Sequencing is the only mainstream option, at roughly five times the price.

Cat DNA tests compared at a glance

The real differences are how many breeds they compare against, how many health markers they screen, and whether you get a dental report.

Test Breeds compared Health markers Typical turnaround Price tier Best for
Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats 70+ 45+ 2–4 weeks $$ Best overall
Basepaws Breed + Health 21 breed types, 4 regions 64 plus a dental report 4–7 weeks $$ Dental risk and wildcat index
Orivet Health Screen & Life Plan None 17 3–5 weeks $ Cheapest health-only screen
Basepaws Whole Genome Sequencing Yes, plus raw data 64 plus ~43 disease risks 9–12 weeks $$$$ Data hoarders and breeders

Prices move constantly and all four go on sale several times a year, so we use tiers rather than figures that go stale. As a rough anchor at the time of writing, the three mainstream kits cluster around the $90 to $105 mark and whole genome sequencing sits near $500. Marker counts also change as labs add panels — check the current product page before you buy.

Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats Best overall

Wisdom Panel compares your cat against 70-plus breeds and screens 45-plus health markers plus 25-plus traits, and it is usually back in two to four weeks — noticeably quicker than the competition.

It is the one we would hand to a friend with a shelter cat and no strong opinions. The report is readable, the breed percentages come with plain-English context, and the health section flags the genetic conditions your vet would actually want to know about, such as polycystic kidney disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy variants. Two swabs are included, which is genuinely useful because getting a good sample from an unimpressed cat is the hardest part of the whole process.

Basepaws Breed + Health Best for dental risk

Fewer breeds, more health markers, and the only mainstream kit with a dedicated dental report. Basepaws compares against 21 breed types across 4 regions, which reads as less precise than Wisdom Panel on breed — but it screens 64 health markers and adds an oral health section that scores predisposition to periodontal disease, tooth resorption and stomatitis.

That matters more than it sounds. Dental disease is one of the most common and most under-treated problems in domestic cats, and it is expensive to fix once it is advanced. Basepaws also produces the wildcat index, which tells you how much of your cat’s DNA resembles wild feline species. It is entertaining rather than clinically useful, and Basepaws is upfront about that. Turnaround is the trade-off: budget four to seven weeks.

Orivet Health Screen & Life Plan Cheapest health-only option

No breed results at all — 17 health markers and 13 traits for the lowest price of the three. If you already know your cat is a purebred Ragdoll, or you simply do not care what the breed mix is, you are paying for the part you want and nothing else. The Life Plan output is a schedule of screening recommendations by age, which is a nice touch for a first-time cat parent.

The catch is that 17 markers is a much narrower net than 45 or 64. If your goal is peace of mind about inherited disease, the extra $10 to $15 for a broader panel is money well spent.

Basepaws Whole Genome Sequencing — for breeders and the genuinely curious

Roughly five times the price, nine to twelve weeks of waiting, and you get raw genomic data you own. It layers about 43 disease risk assessments on top of the standard health markers. For a pet cat, this is overkill. For a breeder making pairing decisions, or someone who wants the data re-analysed as science improves, it is the only mainstream way to get it.

What a cat DNA test can and cannot tell you

Orange tabby flat-faced Exotic shorthair-type cat looking upward against a dark blue textured wall.

It can flag inherited disease variants, confirm traits like coat length and blood type, and give you a breed mix estimate. It cannot diagnose an illness, replace bloodwork, or predict behaviour.

Breed results for domestic cats are inherently fuzzier than for dogs. Most cats are not descended from a small set of intensively bred lines the way most dogs are — the majority of house cats are domestic shorthairs, a landrace rather than a breed. A report saying your tabby is 12% Maine Coon usually means she shares regional ancestry with Maine Coons, not that a Maine Coon is in her family tree.

The health markers are the part with real practical value. Knowing your cat carries a PKD or HCM variant changes the monitoring schedule you and your vet agree on, and it is far cheaper to find out at two than at twelve. Take the report to your vet rather than acting on it alone — a genetic risk is not a diagnosis.

How to get a usable swab from a cat

Swab at least an hour after eating, hold the cheek pouch open with one hand, and rub firmly against the inside of the cheek for the full time on the instructions — most rejected samples are simply too gentle. Two people is easier than one. If your cat lives with other cats, separate them for an hour first so you are not collecting somebody else’s saliva.

The safety side nobody mentions

A DNA kit tells you what is going on inside your cat. It does nothing at all if she slips out the front door, and indoor cats are the ones most likely to be found with no ID because everyone assumes they never go outside. If you are already spending $100 on knowing your cat better, spend a fraction of that on getting her home — we made the full case in do indoor cats need ID tags.

We are biased here, because we make them: Shiloh’s House sells $38 designer acrylic NFC smart tags. A finder taps the tag with any phone, no app needed on their end, and your details load instantly — with engraving on the back as the low-tech backup. Made in the USA, no subscription. Our free companion app, Lohji, is also a reasonable place to park the DNA report alongside vaccine history and vet notes, so it is all in one spot when you switch clinics.

Frequently asked questions

Are cat DNA tests accurate?

The health marker portion is generally reliable — these are established variants tested on validated panels. Breed percentages are best treated as an estimate, because domestic cat populations are far less genetically distinct than dog breeds.

Which cat DNA test is best for a rescue cat?

Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats. The wide breed panel gives the most meaningful answer when you have no history at all, and the health markers give your vet a baseline.

How long do cat DNA test results take?

Two to four weeks for Wisdom Panel, three to five for Orivet, four to seven for Basepaws Breed + Health, and nine to twelve weeks for whole genome sequencing. Published estimates tend to run optimistic — add a week or two.

Can a DNA test tell my cat’s age?

Not the standard kits. There is a separate epigenetic age test on the market that estimates age within about a year, which is a niche but real use case for adopted adult cats of unknown history.

Is a cat DNA test worth it?

For a young cat, yes — the health markers can genuinely change your monitoring plan. For a healthy senior, it is mostly curiosity. Spend the money on bloodwork and a dental instead, and see our new kitten checklist if you are starting from scratch. Then read up on the litter that suits her and what she must never eat.
