What makes a dog food “small breed”?
Three things, and only the first two matter. Small kibble that a 6 lb Yorkie can crunch; higher calorie density, because small dogs have a faster metabolism per pound and tiny stomachs; and, usually, a slightly higher protein and fat percentage. Everything else on the bag (breed silhouettes, “for toy dogs” badges) is marketing. A small dog can eat a regular adult food if the kibble is small enough and you feed by calories, but a small-breed formula makes both easier.
How much should a small dog eat?
Less than you think. A 10 lb adult dog needs roughly 300 to 400 calories a day, which is under a cup of any food on this list. Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories. Small dogs are the easiest dogs to overfeed because an extra quarter cup is a 25% overage. Our feeding chart by weight walks through the math, and if your dog is already carrying extra pounds, see the best dog foods for weight loss.
Purina Pro Plan Small Breed Best overall

The highest-protein food here (29%) with 17% fat and guaranteed live probiotics, in a shredded blend of crunchy kibble and soft meaty pieces. Picky small dogs eat it, which is half the battle. The feeding guide is sensible: ½ to 1 cup a day for dogs 3 to 12 lb, 1¼ to 1½ cups for 13 to 20 lb. At about $3 a pound it’s also cheaper per pound than Royal Canin or Hill’s. The only knock is the label: poultry by-product meal and corn protein meal are quality protein sources, but if you’d rather not see them, look at Blue.
Royal Canin Small Adult Best for weight control
Royal Canin’s whole approach is “precision for size.” Small Adult’s kibble is tiny, and at 359 kcal/cup it’s the least calorie-dense food here, which gives you more margin for error on portions. Protein (25%) and fat (14%) are moderate, and the formula is built around small-dog energy needs rather than maximum protein. It’s also the most expensive per pound. Choose it for a dog that gains weight easily or that struggles with larger kibble.
Hill’s Science Diet Small & Mini: the vet favorite
Hill’s (along with Purina and Royal Canin) meets every WSAVA manufacturer benchmark: full-time nutritionists, feeding trials, their own plants, published research. Small & Mini Adult Chicken & Brown Rice lists chicken first, with 25% protein and 15.3% fat on an as-fed basis. It’s a conservative, well-tested food that most clinics stock. Price is the main downside at about $4 a pound. We compared the big three in depth in Purina vs Royal Canin vs Hill’s.
Blue Buffalo Life Protection Small Breed Best “clean label” value
Deboned chicken first, whole grains, no chicken by-product meal, no corn, wheat or soy, and 26% protein with 398 kcal/cup. At $43.98 for 15 lb it’s the cheapest per pound on this list. The LifeSource Bits (dark vitamin pellets mixed into the kibble) are the one thing to watch: some dogs leave them in the bowl. Stick with this grain-inclusive recipe rather than the grain-free Wilderness line, which was named in the FDA’s DCM reporting.
Small dogs are the easiest dogs to lose
A 7 lb dog fits under a fence gap, through a cracked door and into a stranger’s arms in seconds. The one piece of gear that matters as much as what’s in the bowl is what’s on the collar. A Shiloh’s House smart tag weighs almost nothing, has no battery to die, and any phone that taps it pulls up your dog’s profile and your number. Frequently asked questions
What is the best dog food for small breeds?
Purina Pro Plan Small Breed Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice is our top pick for most small dogs: 29% protein, live probiotics, small kibble and a texture picky dogs finish. Royal Canin Small Adult is better for dogs that gain weight easily.
Do small dogs really need small breed food?
Not strictly. They need kibble they can chew and portions matched to their calorie needs. Small-breed formulas make both easier with smaller kibble and more calories per cup, which is why we recommend them.
How many calories does a 10 pound dog need?
Roughly 300 to 400 calories a day for a typical adult, which is less than one cup of most small-breed foods. Treats should be no more than 10% of that.
Is grain-free food better for small dogs?
No. Grain allergies are rare in dogs, and grain-free diets were the focus of the FDA’s investigation into diet-associated heart disease. All four picks here are grain-inclusive.
What is the cheapest good small breed dog food?
Of the four we compared, Blue Buffalo Life Protection Small Breed is the lowest price per pound at about $2.93, with Purina Pro Plan Small Breed close behind at about $3.05.
