Why Does My Cat Drool? 7 Real Reasons (and When to Worry)
A small amount of drool while your cat is purring, kneading and blissfully relaxed is normal and harmless. Drooling that appears suddenly, smells bad, is stringy or blood-tinged, or comes with a cat who has stopped eating is not – and dental disease is the most common medical cause. Cats are not built to drool the way dogs are, so any new, persistent salivation is worth investigating. Here are the seven reasons it happens and how to tell the happy kind from the urgent kind.
1. Pure contentment
Deep purring, slow blinking and rhythmic kneading can trigger the same relaxed salivary response kittens had while nursing. If it only happens in your lap, only while purring, and stops the moment they get up, it is a compliment rather than a symptom. Cats who do this often do the other nursing throwbacks too – see why cats knead and why cats headbutt you.
2. Dental disease
Cats are prone to resorptive lesions, gingivitis and stomatitis, all of which hurt enough to make swallowing uncomfortable. Warning signs: bad breath, red gum lines, pawing at the face, chewing on one side, dropping kibble, or a sudden preference for wet food. This is a vet visit, not a wait-and-see. Between checkups, dental treats and brushing help; we compared them in our guide to the best cat dental treats and toothpaste.
3. Something tasted awful

A sudden burst of foamy drool right after a pill, a spot-on flea treatment, or a lick of a houseplant is usually a taste reaction. Cats have an intense response to bitterness and will froth, gag and shake their heads. It normally passes within minutes. What matters is what they tasted: lilies, dieffenbachia, philodendron and pothos are toxic to cats, and so are some dog flea products. If you cannot identify what went in the mouth, call your vet or a poison line rather than waiting it out.
4. Nausea
Drooling is one of the first signs of feline nausea, often arriving before any vomiting. Kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis, hairballs and simple dietary indiscretion can all do it. The pattern to watch for is drooling plus lip-licking, swallowing repeatedly, hiding, or turning away from food. If your cat is drooling and off their dinner, our guide to why cats stop eating covers how long is too long to wait.
5. Something stuck in the mouth or throat
A cat who is drooling heavily, pawing at their face and gagging may have a foreign object lodged in the mouth. String, tinsel, sewing thread and bone fragments are the usual culprits, and string is the dangerous one – never pull on a thread you can see, because the other end may be anchored in the intestine. Get to a vet. Sudden, profuse, one-sided drooling with distress is an emergency.
6. Stress and car rides
Some cats drool from anxiety, most reliably in a carrier or a moving car. It comes with panting, flattened ears, dilated pupils and a tense body. It is not dangerous in itself, but it is a sign the cat is genuinely distressed. Carrier training, a covered carrier and a calm route help; so does making the carrier a normal piece of furniture rather than a thing that only appears before the vet. Our roundup of the best cat carriers covers the designs that reduce this.
7. Heat, pain or oral growths
Overheating, mouth ulcers and oral tumours all produce drool, and all of them need a vet rather than home management. Cats do not pant or salivate to cool themselves the way dogs do, so a drooling, open-mouth-breathing cat in warm weather is in trouble. Ulcers on the tongue can follow kidney disease or contact with caustic substances. Any lump, ulcer or one-sided swelling in the mouth of an older cat should be examined promptly.
When to call the vet
Book a same-day appointment if the drool is bloody, foul-smelling, one-sided, or paired with an open mouth, pawing at the face, or refusing food. Book a routine appointment if drooling is new and persistent even when the cat seems fine otherwise. Happy lap-drool during purring needs nothing at all.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for cats to drool when purring?
Yes. Relaxation drool during purring and kneading is a normal throwback to nursing behaviour, and it is harmless as long as it only happens in that context.
Why does my cat drool when I pet him?
Because petting triggers the same deep relaxation response as nursing did. If the drooling only appears while you are stroking him and stops afterwards, it is contentment, not illness.
When is cat drooling an emergency?
Bloody or foul-smelling drool, drooling with an open mouth or gagging, drooling after chewing a plant or chemical, or drooling in a cat who will not eat all warrant urgent care.
Do cats drool when they are in pain?
They can, particularly with mouth pain. Cats hide pain well, so drooling is sometimes the only visible clue that something hurts.
Why is my cat drooling and not eating?
That combination usually points to mouth pain or nausea. A cat who has not eaten in 24 hours needs to be seen, because cats can develop liver problems quickly when they stop eating.
